Frequently asked questions about Chiropractic adjustments and treatments

Please find below our most frequently asked questions about chiropractic care. If there’s something you’d like to know that isn’t on the list, please feel free to contact our Chiropractor in central London.

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a form of healthcare concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The word “chiropractic” means “to be done by hand.” Chiropractors use adjustments to restore joint function and support the nervous system. They help patients maintain optimal health while avoiding unnecessary drugs or surgery.

What is a chiropractor?

A chiropractor is a health care professional focused on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, with an emphasis on treatment through manual adjustment or manipulation of the spine. Chiropractors use a range of techniques to reduce pain, improve function and increase mobility. Most chiropractors aim to reduce pain and improve the functionality of patients as well as to educate them on how they can account for their own health via exercise, ergonomics, and other therapies to treat back pain.

Can chiropractors damage your back?

In short, no. As explained by Dr. Anika, our Chiropractor in London: Although very rare, accidents and risks can happen from a chiropractic adjustment. These isolated cases occur when a patient falls into the wrong hands of unqualified and uncertified chiropractors. An unqualified practitioner will not know how much pressure they should apply, or what techniques they should use in performing the therapy, performing back cracking, etc. Beware of those who call themselves “professional bone cracking experts” and lack any sort of qualification. To avoid this, when looking for a Chiropractor in London, you should always ensure that you check a chiropractor is registered with the General Chiropractic Council.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment, also known as chiropractic manipulation or spinal manipulation, is a common therapeutic treatment for musculoskeletal disorder, specifically the spine. A chiropractic adjustment refers to a chiropractor applying a controlled force to the vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally. The objective of this chiropractic treatment is to reduce joint tightness, with the goals of increasing range of motion, reducing nerve irritability and improving function.

Can I feel sore after a chiropractic treatment?

According to our Chiropractor in London, some patients may experience soreness after the treatment. The body is reacting to the alignment being restored. Most people come to a chiropractor with a dysfunctional spine, and in many cases, it has been this way for a long time. Just like working out, your body’s reaction to these changes may be uncomfortable at first, as it learns to work properly again.

What pains and illnesses can our chiropractor in London treat?

Chiropractic can mainly help with a range of musculoskeletal disorders, here are some examples:

  • Lower back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Tension headaches
  • Herniated disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Whiplash injury
  • Sciatica
  • Chronic back pain
  • Poor posture
What is spinal misalignment?

A spinal misalignment is when a vertebra is not in its correct place, this can irritate the surrounding spinal nerves, joints and muscles.

How does a chiropractor treat these misalignments?

Chiropractors are specialist in correcting misalignments using low force adjustments to restore normal movement and function to the joint.

Will the treatment/Chiropractic adjustment hurt?
No, we specialise in specific Chiropractic adjustments using the lowest force possible to restore movement to your joints. Generally these adjustments do not hurt.
What will happen if I do nothing?
Studies suggest that the longer that these misalignments go uncorrected the greater your risk of the problem escalating.
When should I start treatment?

The sooner you start treatment, the quicker, easier and cheaper it is to get the result we are both looking for.

Why did it happen now?

Sometimes your body is able to deal with minor spinal misalignments on its own, with rest or exercise. However, if you get past the point where your body can cope, Chiropractic treatment is often the best way to help your body move forwards.

How long will it take to treat it?

The main factors that determine the rate of recovery are:

· Your age

· The amount of time the problem has been there for

· How many problems you have and their severity

· What you are doing to help/aggravate the situation

After your initial consultation, we will be able to give you a better indication as to what and how long it will take to get your health back.
