What are chiropractic adjustments?

A chiropractic adjustment is a treatment technique that chiropractors use to improve movement in tight or restricted joints. You may also hear the term manipulation which means the same thing. Adjustments are primarily used in the spine, but we also use adjustments in extremity joints of the body, such as the foot, ankle, knee, shoulder and elbow. Our top-rated chiropractors use different chiropractic adjustment techniques, being some gentle, while others involve the application of a controlled force to a spinal joint.

Here is a list of the most common chiropractic adjustment techniques:

This technique is widely used, with 96% of all chiropractors using the Diversified Technique on approximately 70% of their patients. The purpose of this technique is to Restore spinal alignment, repair joint dysfunction, and ensure movement and mobility. Using hands-on thrusts with extreme precision, chiropractors can restore spinal alignment, increasing a patient’s range of motion, which are affected by misaligned joints or bones.

The goal of spinal mobilization is the same as diversified spinal manipulation – to restore or to enhance joint function. However, unlike diversified spinal manipulation, slow movement, usually to a firm endpoint of joint movement, is used to mobilize the joint. Chiropractors may choose spinal mobilization for patients with a contra-indication to adjustments e.g., osteoporosis or inflammatory arthritis.

This is a hand-held, spring-loaded instrument-based manipulation/adjustment protocol. Instead of the manipulating/adjusting forces being delivered by hand, force is generated with the small appliance that delivers a lighter, but quicker, thrust than can be delivered by hand. Activator can be used as a primary treatment protocol for all patients or patients who may not desire manual manipulation/adjustment or where manual manipulation/adjustment may be contraindicated.

This is a specific chiropractic technique that uses mechanical and hands-on manipulation/ adjustment utilizing a special table where the spine is tractioned and flexed forward. This technique is primarily utilized to treat cervical and lumbar disc herniations, non-disc spinal disorders, and to increase mobility of spinal joints.

This is the application of chiropractic manipulation/adjustment to joints other than those of the spine, i.e., shoulder, elbow, wrist/hand/finger, hip, knee, ankle/foot/toe. Examples of conditions treated by extremity manipulation: carpal tunnel syndrome, gait, or posture-related problems.

Drop Technique is a comfortable way for many people to experience the benefits of the chiropractic adjustment. Whilst the patient lies on the bench, a cushion under the problem area is set to meet the patient’s weight and raised slightly. The practitioner then takes a contact on the restricted joint and applies a quick impulse, in the right direction to correct the joint movement. The cushion is set to drop as the practitioner performs the treatment

Usually chiropractors in London prescribe strengthening and stretching exercises for the back, neck and extremity problems. The aim is to reduce pain, prevent muscle deterioration, improve joint health, help increase strength, stability, and range of motion. As well as also protect against new or recurring injuries.
