Tips from our London Chiropractor: Relieving pain from your extremities

Most people visit a chiropractor to get help or treatment that focuses on the spine. This is what chiropractors are most known for treating – spinal conditions. However, chiropractors also treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions that affect the extremities too. At Glow Health chiropractic our chiropractor helps many patients that are suffering from extremity pain. For example, nerve pain (tingling in legs or tingling in fingertips) and even stiffness in the hands, shoulders and feet. In this blog posts we are going to cover the most common extremity problems seen by our London chiropractor. So keep on reading to find out more.

Leg pain

Leg pain is a common condition that chiropractors treat. Most of the time, it originates from the lower back via the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in the human body. It runs from the lumbar region of the back, through to the heels. Irritation or inflammation of the sciatic nerve can result in numbness or tingling in the legs. This is Sciatica.

Sciatica is caused by different things. This includes degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis (where the vertebra slip over another one). Or piriformis syndrome (where the muscle in the buttocks can compress and irritate the sciatic nerve)

Pain in the extremities reduces by treating the root cause or nerve irritation. The most important part is finding the right diagnosis.

Disc injury also causes leg pain. Spinal vertebra are separated by discs that are fluid filled. These discs provide shock absorption and prevent the vertebrae from rubbing together. The discs can be damaged or herniate through injury.

When injury occurs at the disc, the fluid it contains can escape and irritate the lower back nerves. This can cause lower back pain, along with leg pain, muscle spasms and muscular tension. Our London chiropractor will adjust the spine to reduce the pressure being placed on the nerves.

Joint pain and inflammation

Extremity join pain has many possible causes. These include autoimmune disease and repetitive stress or overuse injuries. Our London chiropractor can help by performing gentle and precise adjustments to the affected joints. Thereby improving the healing process, restoring mobility and reducing pain.

Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation of the joints, it is usually chronic. In severe cases, arthritis can lead to the bones fusing together. This can reduce mobility and cause significant pain. Chiropractic care can reduce symptoms of arthritis in the extremity joints i.e. knees, ankles, wrists, elbows and more. However, in the words of our London Chiropractor: “It is important to assess whether the bones have fused prior to treatment”.
