In our last article, we covered the risks of self back cracking. Today, Dr. Anika, gives us 4 recommendations of thing we can do so that we don´t have the urge to keep cracking your back.
Staying active
Move! A sedentary life, leads to back pain. Having a sendentary life gives you a great urge to stretch and pop your joints.
If you sit at a desk for the whole day, it’s critical that you take small breaks every 45 minutes, use these breaks to stand up and move a little. The British Journal of Sports Medicine (Does leisure time physical activity protect against low back pain? Systematic review and meta-analysis of 36 prospective cohort studies | British Journal of Sports Medicine (bmj.com)) found that a regular physical activity decreases the risk of chronic lower back pain by at least 11%.
Support Your Spine
In a study in Chiropractic & Manual Therapies (The effect of a lumbar support pillow on lumbar posture and comfort during a prolonged seated task (nih.gov)), they found that supportive lumbar pillow was a means to important improvements in posture and low back pain. Placing a lumbar roll behind your back actually helps and improves your ergonomics. By keeping a good posture you will, for sure, feel less stiff, and you will not have the urge of back cracking now and again.
Start stretching
Stop the back cracking habit and perform activities that are just as effective in relieving muscle tension, and are more productive and constructive to your skeletal health. These activities include controlled stretching, one that works for almost everyone is to stand up and reach for the sky!
Visit a Professional Chiropractor
If you’re experiencing back or neck tension, find professional help. Look for a chiropractor (have a licenced chiropractor perform back cracking), a physiotherapist, an osteopath, or simply visit your GP.
